The Blue Trail and the Path of Love
On this page:
The Blue Trail is the most well-known trail in the Cinque Terre. It connects all five villages and because of this it is divided into four sections. It is the shortest route between two villages with the track passing close to the sea. But the negative aspect is that there are often landslides after rain and a part of it can be closed for restoration work that can last for years.
Tourists often choose this trail, but if you love trekking we suggest you also consider some of the other longer trails which are higher up and offer better views. The most important thing to remember is to bring comfortable shoes which are suitable for walking.
Sections of the Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro) which are currently closed and map
Interactive map. Information updated to December, 2024.
Manarola - Corniglia (short way)
The current condition of the route: closed for a long period. Reason: landslides and instability of the terrain. It should fully open from May 2026. More info: only the first 300 meters (950 ft) are open (from the Manarola side).
If a section of the Blue Trail which is of interest to you is closed (marked on the map), consider other itineraries. They’re all indicated on the page “Popular Trails”
Entry ticket to the Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro)
Due to the fact that the Sentiero Azzurro is always under reconstruction, you have to pay to access it. You will need to purchase the “Cinque Terre Card” even to walk just one section and it is valid for the current day only. Since the Path of Love (Via dell'Amore) is very popular, you must book a visit and pay an extra fee of 10 euros.
The Path of Love (Via dell'Amore)
The current condition of the route: Open. Opening date: August 09, 2024.
This is the shortest and most famous part of the Blue trail and it connects Manarola and Riomaggiore. This section has evening lighting and also has elevators for the disabled. There are no variations in altitude, so it's a really great walk.
You need to pay an extra fee of 10 euros with your Cinque Terre Card and book a time slot at viadellamore.info. This fee has been in place since 2024.
Manarola – Corniglia
The current condition of the route: closed for a long period. Reason: landslides and instability of the terrain. It should fully open from May 2026. More info: only the first 300 meters (950 ft) are open (from the Manarola side).
The second easiest part of the Blue trail has minimal differences of altitude which are almost imperceptible, but because of the steep slopes which fall below the trail there are often landslides. It takes years to restore the trail and access is impossible during that time.
Corniglia – Vernazza
The current condition of the route: Open. Opening date: June 06, 2020.
A popular trail. It is much easier from Corniglia (few steps). Medium if you start from Vernazza. Normally, if you visit Cinque Terre in just 1 day you skip Corniglia and this trail as well, in that case, check the next trail.
Vernazza – Monterosso al Mare
The current condition of the route: Open. Opening date: June 06, 2020.
This is the most well-known trail in the Cinque Terre after the Path of Love (it is almost easy with one exception - many steps), so if you wish to walk just one trail then you should choose this! It’s best to start your walk in the morning from Vernazza or in the afternoon from Monterosso so you don’t have the sun in your face.
